K.S.S.A. JUNIOR REGATTA TONBRIDGE TOWN SAILING CLUB
7TH JUNE 2003
Ideal sailing conditions, sun and a steady breeze greeted twenty-five young sailors at Tonbridge Sailing Club, Saturday 7th June for the Kent Schools Sailing Association, Junior Sailing Regatta.
The day featured both racing and coaching to improve the young sailors’ performance whose ages ranged from seven to fifteen, sailing Topers, Optimists, Mirrors and one Laser 4.7. They represented clubs from across the county of Kent, including Bewl, Chipstead, Wilsonian, Tonbridge Town, Whitstable, Redoubt.
Of the four races sailed, three were required for a final position. The overall event winner was Georgia Trapp from Bewl Sailing club, sailing an Optimist, who recorded three 1st places in a close fought battle with Gemma Amos sailing a Topper who finished second. Third place went to Lawrence Andrews.
The extremely close racing gave for some interesting interpretations of rules and close boat handling, rapidly improved as the day progressed.
On the water coaching, gave an opportunity for the younger and more inexperienced participants to develop their skills as the day proceeded. These efforts were rewarded with a variety of prizes
The event was a resounding success with all sailors enjoying the activities, for many of whom this was their first trip away from their home clubs.
