The NSSA topper team racing championship was held
at Bury lakes SC, near Rickmansworth. 32 teams of three sailors (96 young
sailors) descended upon this corner of Hertfordshire from all parts of the UK.
Races were run on a "Swiss league" system with a computer setting
new matches for winners and losers after each round.
Good conditions with a steady breeze on day one
saw the completion of five rounds, with Kent "A" winning four and Kent "B"
winning three races. On day two three further rounds were sailed but in
conditions of heavy rain and decreasing wind league sailing was brought to an
end by an extended lull. By the end of round 8 Kent "B" had overtaken Kent
"A" to finish 4th and 8th respectively /32. The wind came up again in the
afternoon for the semi-finals and finals to be sailed in very blustery
conditions. Kent B raced well in the semi-finals against top of the league
Oxfordshire Schools A team, who finished the worthy winners of the
2008 tournament.
Encouraged by their performance and with some
lessons learned from the experience, the six KSSA sailors can now look forward
to sailing as a unified team in the RYA Youth Team Racing Championships (to be
sailed in fireflies) to be held at Oxford SC, Farmoor reservoir, next month.
