NSSA team racing championships 2015

We’ve just returned from a busy weekend at the  held at St Ives sailing club, Cambs. where Kent was represented by Stan Chick, Imy Cage-White and Pierce Seward.

Given their very limited experience of team racing and the rules therein, Stan calmly announced upon arrival at the lake, "We’ve come with low expectations and plan to meet them!” Faced with 93 helms, mostly from team racing schools and clubs, we smiled and thought of getting home before the traffic!

With a steady 12-14 knots the valiant team resigned themselves to their fate, squeezed into their toppers and went afloat… and won. Shortly after and with a little more interest we watched as Kent repeated this feat again, and again and again.

We parents understood little of the ‘round robin' selection process however deduced the more races Kent won, the harder the opposition became however this counted for nothing as we excitedly witnessed Stan, Imy and Pierce end the day one first overall as the only undefeated team. An amazing result showing tenacity, boat speed and skill but above all true awareness and consideration between the three team members.

Sunday brought lighter airs leaving our team vulnerable to lighter helms and highly practiced teams but despite losing a couple of races they admirably battled into the semi-finals. With a failing breeze they drew a skilled lightweight opposition and simply couldn't overcome the disadvantage and were finally knocked out. Cambs went on to triumph with a much deserved and popular win at their home club.

Overall, given we genuinely expected to be out and on the road home by midday Saturday this was an incredible weekend of sailing by Kent who came (joint) 3rd from 32 teams.

Well done to Stan, Imy and Pierce!
